17 November at XPO 929 Broadway Bushwick BK
GARY WILSON/Jan Terri/ZZZs/childproof w/ Daisy Berkowitz-SMP/Supercute!/
childproof opening for Gary Wilson at XPO, here with Tina Trachtenburg as the pigeon, Jason Trachtenburg on keyboard, Cole Jett on drums, Tim Garrigan on bass, and both Scott Putesky (a/k/a Daisy Berkowitz) on guitar and Ariana Van Gelder on glockenspiel
Proto new wave spaz impresario and DIY legend Gary Wilson released "You Think You Really Know Me" in 1977, a quirky album that blends lounge, melodic pop and noise punctuated by electronic experiments, saturated in whiteboy funk, like Zappa minus the sarcasm and Prince sans pretension. Alternately creepy and sweet, Mr. Wilson catalogues and narrates his romantic obsessions -imagined or not- from his teen years on, name-checking girlfriends and crushes. Traveling and performing with blowup dolls, mannequins ...
and taping trash to himself live, his performances effectively double as performance art. As conceptually solid as unselfconscious, visceral as lighthearted: our cathexis, his therapy, all fun.
$12 tickets in advance, $15 at the door, $27 all-you-can-drink champagne and stage-view seating

Advance Base (Owen Ashworth of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone!) is rolling in from Chicago to open for Mark Kozelek, but the night before you get the chance to catch him as a headliner in a much more intimate space with two other great artists: sometime Matador-associated folkie Jennifer O'Connor, and The Pendulum Swings, which is the new fun big band of Jason Trachtenburg, who you know from the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players. You don't wanna miss this!!

$8 advance / $10 day-of-show 7:30 doors The Pendulum Swings (http:// Jennifer O'Connor (http:// Advance Base (http:// tickets on sale here: http://www.ticketweb.com/ bios on the bands!: ADVANCE BASE (10:00) Advance Base is the new musical project by Chicago, Illinois singer, songwriter, & producer Owen Ashworth (formerly of Casiotone for the Painfully Alone). A Shut-In's Prayer is Ashworth's first full-length release in over three years, & his first under the name Advance Base. Recorded at home & in piano practice rooms at the Chicago Public Library, A Shut-In's Prayer is an intimate collection of deliberately crafted but decidedly lo-fi torch songs, waltzes & ballads. Accompanying himself on his Rhodes 54 electric piano, Ashworth sings nostalgic stories about lost loves, childhood friends, estranged siblings, & hard feelings over simple drum machine rhythms & spare percussion. The additional arrangements that fill out these ten songs intertwine gentle upright piano melodies & expansive electric bass, filling the spaces between plainly-sung harmony vocals & strummed autoharp chords, with the occasional creaking floorboard or snapping reverb spring to remind you of the cramped rooms where this album was recorded. It's a different sound than one might expect from the dude from Casiotone for the Painfully Alone, but Ashworth's keen ear for melody & idiosyncratic skill as a lyricist have only improved in recent years, pushing his memorable songwriting in all new directions. At age 35, Ashworth has a lot of music left in him, & he's just getting started again. This is a rare chance to see Ashworth in an intimate, headlining (and South Brooklyn) setting, before he opens for Mark Kozelek the next night at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. JENNIFER O'CONNOR (9:00) Jennifer O'Connor is a Brooklyn-based singer and songwriter who has released five albums for Matador, Red Panda, and her own label, Kiam - and she's currently at work on her sixth. Her most recent effort, I Want What You Want, garnered praise from Rolling Stone, Pitchfork, the Village Voice, NBC and many more. O’Connor has toured the United States alongside bands such as Wilco, Cass McCombs, Silver Jews, The Mountain Goats, Damien Jurado, Feist, and Yo La Tengo. Her songs have appeared in numerous television shows and films such as Sons of Anarchy, Parenthood, Private Practice, The Ghost Whisperer, The Strangers, Think Like A Man, and The Sensation of Sight. THE PENDULUM SWINGS (8:00) Brooklyn's most outrageous indie-nerd big swing band, The Pendulum Swings are more than a dance band. Jason Trachtenburg, formerly and currently of the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, leads this 13-piece ensemble that has been described as "a warped Sinatra. Highly recommended." (Time Out N.Y.) With all original songs in the vein of Cole Porter, George Gershwin, and the late Marvin Hamlisch, The Pendulum Swings deliver a memorable night of highly orchestrated music, performance, and comedy. The Pendulum Swings debut album, The Greatest Hits of Big Band, will be released in October on X5 Records. poster designed (made out of pieces of fabric!) by Natalia Zuniga: http://peopleofaction.org/ The Band Mom is your favorite boutique college radio promotion company. July 2012
both THE PENDULUM SWINGS shows
Wed July 4 at Goodbye Blue Monday 1087 Broadway, Brooklyn, 10PM
Sun July 1 at Gowanus Ballroom 55 9th St., Brooklyn, afternoon show
Throughout its history the Gowanus has inspired both utopian dreams and dystopian nightmares. The past four-hundred years have witnessed the site’s transformation from a fertile series of tidal wetlands to one of the busiest industrial waterways in the United States. The canal, once a source for sustenance and hope, is today tainted by a notorious legacy of pollution and decay. Yet recent activity in the area suggests rejuvenation is at hand.
TO THE STARS ON THE WINGS OF AN EEL offers a chance to explore the urban unconscious of the Gowanus, to reimagine the past, decipher the present, and envision possible futures. Artists working in the neighborhood––some long-time fixtures, others recent arrivals––are breathing new life into a once stagnant and decaying quarter.
Join us as we transform the Gowanus Ballroom, itself a former steel mill dating to the nineteenth century, re-mapping psychogeographies and investigating mysteries of the canal and surrounding areas. By exploring real and imagined tales of the past, we pursue today’s dreams and become the myth-makers of tomorrow.
